Family Finances: How I Manage Money as a Mumpreneur
Saving, Investing & Budgeting With Three Kids (Without Losing My Mind!)
Before I became a mumpreneur, I used to think money management was simple. Then kids happened. Suddenly, everything got expensive—school fees, food, endless birthday parties. I quickly realized if I didn’t take control of our finances, we’d be drowning in expenses.
Step 1: Creating a Budget That Works (Even When Income Fluctuates)
📌 50/30/20 Rule (Mum Edition!):
- 50% Needs (Food, Rent, School Fees)
- 30% Wants (Family outings, Netflix, self-care)
- 20% Savings & Investments (Even if it’s small, it adds up!)
📌 Envelope Method: I allocate cash for groceries, transport & kids’ expenses in separate envelopes—once it’s gone, it’s gone! (Works like magic!)
📌 Emergency Fund: Kids = unexpected expenses. I save at least ₦50k monthly for surprises like hospital visits (we have health insurance, saves cost!) or school projects.
Step 2: Saving & Investing (Even on a Tight Budget)
💰 Saving Small, Consistently: I started saving ₦500 daily. In a year, that’s ₦182,500! Small amounts matter.
đź’° Investing in What I Understand: I stick to low-risk investments like mutual funds & real estate contributions instead of get-rich-quick schemes.
đź’° Multiple Streams of Income: Side hustles saved me! I monetized my skills in consulting, digital products & even teaching other mums.
Step 3: Teaching My Kids About Money
👦 Piggy Banks & Allowances: My kids have money jars—they save, spend & share.
👦 Earning, Not Just Spending: They do simple chores to earn small rewards (not bribes, just lessons on work ethic!).
👦 Smart Spending Talks: I explain why we compare prices & avoid impulse buying.

More Budgeting Hacks for Mums
💡 Bulk Buying Essentials: I buy rice, beans, pasta, and cleaning supplies in bulk from local markets or wholesale stores. Saves ₦20k+ per month!
💡 Meal Prepping to Reduce Food Waste: I plan meals for the week and stick to a grocery list. No more impulse buys = savings of ₦15k/month.
💡 Using Thrift Stores & Sales for Kids’ Clothes: Instead of always buying new, I go for quality thrift finds. A ₦15k outfit at the mall? I get a similar one for ₦3k at thrift markets.
đź’ˇ Affordable Family Entertainment: Instead of expensive amusement parks, we do picnics, DIY movie nights, and free community events. The kids love it just as much!
💡 Cutting Unnecessary Subscriptions: I reviewed my auto-debits and canceled ones we didn’t really use. That extra ₦10k now goes into our emergency fund.
More Investing & Income-Boosting Ideas for Mumpreneurs
đź’° Investing in Mini Importation: I started a side hustle selling kids’ educational toys, sourcing affordable ones from online suppliers. A ₦50k investment started making ₦200k/month!
💰 Renting Out Extra Space: If you have an extra room or shop space, consider renting it out. A friend earns ₦250k monthly from an unused shop space.
💰 Online Courses & Digital Products: I turned my experience into an affordable e-book for mums on budgeting. Cost ₦2k to create, but sold for ₦3,500 per download. Passive income!
💰 Cooperative & Rotational Savings (Ajo/Esusu): I joined a trusted group savings plan, contributing ₦20k/month and getting a lump sum at the right time for bigger expenses.
💰 Affordable Investment Apps: I started investing just ₦5k monthly in mutual funds—small but compounding over time!
